Partners HealthCare, which includes the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, has been named one of the nation’s 10 Top Health Systems by Thomson Reuters, a provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of health care. A Thomson Reuters announcement said that when compared with peers around the nation, Partners HealthCare saved more lives, caused fewer medical complications, made fewer medical errors, followed recommended standards of care more closely, released patients half a day sooner on average, and scored better on patient satisfaction surveys.

From its beginnings as a Navy base during World War II to its present-day status as the Island’s only commercial airport, the Martha’s Vineyard Airport has seen a number of airlines come and go. After 50 years of service and two years of negotiations, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is donating its Edgartown property and equipment, as well as a new $10,000 fund to help low-income pet owners with veterinary bills, to the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard.
MSPCA president and chief executive Carter Luke told the Dukes County commissioners Wednesday night that the new fund for pet owners in need would help keep together families who otherwise might have to give up their animal for adoption.
