The mystery of the sudden crackdown in Tisbury on businesses flying “open” flags has taken on the air of a whodunit, with restaurant proprietors suspecting it was initiated to harm their trade.

Enforcement of a bylaw relating to signs for commercial premises, which was ignored for years if not decades and of which most town officials, including selectmen, were unaware, began suddenly a couple of weeks ago.

The town building and zoning inspector Kenneth Barwick was the man doing the enforcing.

In the Edgartown Triangle there is a store with boxes of compact discs labeled “$1” out front, crates of used CDs inside, and a sizeable collection of new and used vinyl. Aboveground Records is adapting to the 21st century.

The heart of the business is Vineyard-born Mike Barnes. At 36, he has owned Aboveground for 16 years. The store began before the mp3 existed and has seen what that technology has done to the music industry.

The Permanent Endowment of Martha’s Vineyard has supported Island students and nonprofits for 28 years. And on Tuesday this week, the board of the Permanent Endowment paused to celebrate its students at a breakfast with current and past recipients of endowment fund scholarships at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.

Lighthouse Hours Linger

They’re keeping the light on longer up-Island.

Beginning June 18, the Gay Head (Aquinnah) Lighthouse will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The lighthouse will also be open to the public for special weekend sunset hours. From June 24 through August 13, Friday and Saturday evening hours are from 7 to 9 p.m., and from August 19 to September 17 the hours on Fridays and Saturdays are from 6 to 8 p.m.

All lighthouse hours are weather permitting.

Rick Bausman and the Drum Workshop are bringing the beat to a whole new level. Called BeatFeat the idea is as simple and perfect as a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, two great things finally coming together as one. Participants play the drums while working out on a stationary spinning bike.
