Water samples taken Monday in Oak Bluffs were found clean, raising hopes that a boil-water order issued by the state could be lifted by the end of the week.

The order was issued by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection last Friday after coliform bacteria was found in the public water supply.

Water samples from 40 different sites on Monday were flown to a private water testing firm in Sandwich. The town must record three consecutive days of uncontaminated water samples before the state order can be lifted.

Free bottled water will be available to Oak Bluffs residents at the town library today, as municipal water officials continue to work to discover the source of coliform contamination that forced an order from the state for all residents to boil their drinking water at the outset of the weekend.

Disinfectant has been added to the water supply which serves nearly all of the 3,500 town residents, but the order from the Department of Environmental Protection to boil water used for drinking, food preparation, dishwashing and oral hygiene will remain in effect until tests run clean.

Bacteria was found in several samples during monthly water testing on Thursday. The water district immediately notified the state Department of Environmental Protection, which issued the boil water order at 5:30 p.m.
