An Edgartown man was seriously injured and charged with drunk driving and negligent operation on Wednesday after he crashed his motorcycle while trying to pass a car on the Edgartown-West Tisbury Road at a high rate of speed.

Michael Jackson, 40, of Edgartown, was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation, speeding and operating a motorcycle after sunset on a learner’s permit.

The Martha’s Vineyard Cultural Council is calling for funding proposals from individuals, organizations and schools. Council grants are to support projects that enhance excellence, access, education and diversity in the arts, humanities and interpretative sciences, to improve the quality of life for all of the Island’s residents. This year’s grant applications are due Oct. 15.

The Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School celebrated the addition of four newly-built classrooms at a potluck ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday evening in West Tisbury.

Board president Laura Sargent Hall used hedge clippers to slash the blue ribbon, and school girls collected the gold bows for souvenirs, after some singing and bagpipe music greeted the latest extension to the post-and-beam school that began 14 years ago with nothing but the main hallway connecting some classroom trailers.

An unidentified object recently appeared on Beach Road on both sides of the Big Bridge, an object as foreign to some Islanders as a shopping mall or an alien spacecraft.

Of course it is only a stoplight, a rather common item in other parts of the world, but something of a curiosity on the Vineyard. This particular light is only temporary, and has been set up to direct traffic while work takes place during the off-season on the Big Bridge and the Little Bridge down the road.
