Commercial deliveries of diesel fuel to fishermen working from the Lake street dock on Lake Tashmoo have been stopped, after operating for some 18 months, apparently illegally.
The action followed a report to town selectmen on Tuesday night by the Tashmoo management and harbor management committees, which not only deemed the operation an environmental hazard, but also took the selectmen to task for “selective and preferential enforcement” of regulations prohibiting commercial activity on the dock.
Closing Sale
Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard’s Decorator Show House and Gardens at 105 Main street in Edgartown closed to the public on Sept. 27, and will be holding a closing sale on Saturday, Oct. 10 and Sunday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days. Sale items include designer furnishings, Island artwork, plants and shrubs and outdoor furnishings. For details, call 508-939-4114.
Menemsha will once again be the setting for a scene on screen, this time a European television movie.
Chilmark selectmen this week approved a request by Paul Van Wormer, production manager for Van Wormer International, to use the Menemsha Texaco gas pumps as a backdrop for the scene in a German movie described as similar to the U.S. series The Love Boat.
Mr. Van Wormer had already received permission from Texaco owners Marshall and Katie Carroll, on condition that the filming does not interfere with regular business at the gas station.
Groundbreaking
The Island Housing Trust, the Tisbury affordable housing committee and the Island Affordable Housing Fund will host a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 14 from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Lambert’s Cove Road property where an affordable housing project is planned. Parking is along John Hoft Road. Look for green balloons. Rain date is Thursday, Oct. 15, at the same time.
The Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club homestead is done. Last week the club members had their first monthly Wednesday night dinner and meeting in the place, and accolades were passed around along with stuffed chicken dinners. Over 70 came and enjoyed a good time with a fire burning bright in the newly restored fireplace.
Ride for Charity
Cycle Martha’s Vineyard, a charity bike ride sponsored by the Rotary Club of Martha’s Vineyard, takes place on Saturday, Oct. 17. Proceeds benefit Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Martha’s Vineyard and other Rotary charities.
