William E. Marks received an ambassador for peace award at a public ceremony during the Vigil for International Peace and Ecology held at the Central Park bandshell in New York city on Sept. 19. Mr. Marks spoke and played Native American flute at the vigil and received the award for his international efforts on behalf of water through his books, public speaking and music.
Mr. Marks’ book Water Voices from Around the World was produced as part of the United Nations’ International Decade of Water.
An Island man was attacked by two assailants and stabbed in the neck with a putty knife on Main street,Vineyard Haven late Sunday evening.
Tisbury police have arrested two men in connection with the attack.
Roy J. Cavanaugh Jr., 47, was arrested early Monday morning and Richard Abrazinski of Edgartown, also 47, was arrested Wednesday morning.
Both have been charged with assault to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and mayhem.

Trevor Byrn, 18, of Bethel, Conn., was indicted on single counts of armed robbery, assault and battery to cause serious bodily injury and aggravated assault and battery. Alex J. Daignault, 19, also of Bethel, Conn., was indicted on single counts of unarmed robbery and aggravated assault and battery.
Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, sponsor of the Spirit of the Vineyard Award, is asking for nominations for the 2009 award.
The award, given annually, honors those who have served for one or more nonprofit organizations on the Island, and whose work has made a difference to individuals and to the community as a whole. The criteria for selection include selflessness, range and depth of service performed, the length of volunteer service and the effect on the quality of life of the individuals who received help and for the Island community as a whole.
