Dementia Care

Family caregivers or professionals may attend a Dementia Certificate Program course on Friday, Sept. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional Transit Authority in Edgartown.

Tuition for this training from Alz-heimer’s Services of Cape Cod and the Islands is $85 and includes a certificate of completion and 6 CEUs.

Tuition for family caregivers is $10 to cover the costs of materials.

CPR/First Aid Classes

The Red Cross offers CPR and First Aid classes on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the YMCA in Oak Bluffs.

The class is in two parts: from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. is Adult and Child CPR/AED (rescue breathing, first aid for choking, recognizing a heart attack); the cost is $65 for this certification only. The First Aid class follows, until 4:30 p.m.; the cost is $80 total for both classes.

Instead of the usual display of gorgeous jewelry in the window at C.B. Stark on Main street, Vineyard Haven, last Friday customers were greeted with plywood shutters that read “Dear Earl, please be a pearl and go away. Love, C.B. Stark.” Inside the store, similar messages for Hurricane Bob, Gloria and Hugo could be seen on the reverse side of the panel. Boarding up for hurricanes was nothing new for Ms. Stark, but being asked to close in the middle of the day on a holiday weekend was another story.

Welcome Hunter

Jennifer and Russell Welsh of Oak Bluffs announce the birth of a son, Hunter Alexander, born on Sept. 4, 2010, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Hunter weighed 5 pounds, 13 ounces at birth.

John Arrives

Stephanie and Patrick Bryant of Oak Bluffs announce the birth of a son, John Jacobson Bryant, born on Sept. 4, 2010, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. John weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces at birth.

Hello Charlotte

Laura Marshard and Bruce Marshard announce the birth of a daughter, Charlotte Esther May Marshard, born on August 26, 2010. Charlotte weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces at birth. She joins her big brother, Jack Milton Marshard.
