Baby Earl was born about 10 days ago, on the west coast of tropical Africa. At that stage, meteorologists called him disturbed, but not yet necessarily dangerous. They watched him closely, though, as he left that continent behind and began moving out across the Atlantic.

His first mention on the National Weather Service Hurricane Advisory Archive was on the morning of Wednesday last week, although he did not at that stage have a name.

School enrollment remains fairly flat this year, and the most major changes that will be seen in Martha’s Vineyard Public Schools are the faces of faculty members, when Island students return to school on Tuesday, Sept. 7, the day after Labor Day.

The first day of school marks another change, as students will return two days earlier than in previous years.

Care for Dementia

A dementia certificate program will be offered for professionals who want to gain more knowledge about dementia and the tools for providing better care. The program consists of six hours of training over two days. Classes will be held on Sept. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. and on Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The tuition is $85 and includes a certificate of completion and six CEUs. The cost for family caregivers is $10 to cover the costs of materials.

5K Chop Challenge

On Sunday, Sept. 12, the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library will host the annual race for the library. The 5k run/walk starts at the library with runners proceeding to the West Chop Lighthouse and back. There will also be a 1/2 mile fun run for kids (13 and under). There will be prizes for winners in all age groups, and a raffle. 5k starts at 10 a.m.; fun run for kids starts at 9:45 a.m.; Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

Big Ship Big Tour

The Kalmar Nyckel, the Tall Ship of Delaware, will be in Vineyard Haven this weekend, taking tours and sails on Saturday, Sunday and Labor Day.

Tours of the ship will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and three-hour public sails from 4 to 7 p.m. Tours are $10 for adults and $5 for children (17 and under); reservations are not required.

Sails are $60 for adults and $40 for children. Reservations are highly recommended at 866-659-7447.
