Icelandic mussel farmer Vidir Bjornsson; wait, do we even need to go on? Let’s just pause for a moment to think how puny salutations like Miss, Mr. or Mrs. sound in comparison to Icelandic mussel farmer, which is just about the epitome of cool.
Writer’s Residency Reads
Howes House Writers
The Howes House Writers are hitting the stage again in celebration of the publication of the first issue of the Martha’s Vineyard Writer’s Journal, a collection of their work.
This reading will take place on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 5 p.m. at the West Tisbury Library. The evening features readings by Ellie Bates, Jeanne Hewett, Ed Housman, Dorris Housman, and Sally Williams among others
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 508-693-3366.
On Saturday, Sept. 10, Barbara McBride will be the guest speaker at the Martha’s Vineyard Chapter of the Order of St. Luke. The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Anderson Room of Grace Episcopal Church in Vineyard Haven. There will be music, prayers and a healing Eucharist. A brown-bag lunch will be shared afterwards.
Vineyard seasonal resident Dr. Mache Seibel, the author of a recent book aimed at providing simple, lifesaving information, believes that one of the most common reasons people die in a medical emergency is they don’t know when to call 911 or what to do, or not to do, after they call.
Friends Take the Cake
At their annual meeting on August 31, the Friends of the West Tisbury Library were presented with a surprise birthday cake to celebrate the organization’s 30th anniversary.
The anniversary comes at a propitious moment in the library’s history. In July of this year, the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners announced that West Tisbury would receive a $2.98 million grant to help pay for renovation and expansion of the library building it has severely outgrown.
