Tastes of Tashmoo
The fifth annual Tastes of Tashmoo, a benefit to support the ongoing restoration of the 1887 Tashmoo Spring building, will be held on Friday, Sept. 2 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at a waterfront home on Hines Point. The event features live music and a silent auction, as well as tastes from the Island’s waters, farms, caterers, restaurants, wine shops, and brew pub.
The cost for the event is $50 per person.

The wind is free and there will likely be plenty of it for tomorrow’s first Martha’s Vineyard Wind Festival in Oak Bluffs. The kite-flying festival at Ocean and Waban Parks is a merger of many new and old ideas. It’s a celebration for the end of the summer, an opportunity to gather for fun and fellowship. It’s string, paper and tails taking over the skies.
The event begins at 11 a.m. with kite making in Waban Park. Kites will be flying through the afternoon from noon to 6 p.m. mostly in Ocean Park. It is free and open to all ages.
Cliffe Knechtle, pastor for Grace Community Church in New Canaan, Conn., will be preaching at the Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs this Sunday, August 28. Reverend Knechtle has spoken on university campuses around the country since 1980. He is the author of two books, Heaven Can’t Wait and Give Me an Answer. In 1990 he began the television program Give Me an Answer, which airs in portions of the United States, Australia, New Zealand, India and England. Cliffe’s parents were the founding members of the Presbyterian Church in New Canaan, where he grew up.
At the Yard, Island resident Laura D. Roosevelt has been elected president of the board of trustees, and consulting artistic director David R. White will stay through 2014 as artistic and executive director
Ms. Roosevelt will succeed Sarah Jane Hughes on Oct. 1, when the Yard begins a new fiscal year. Ms. Hughes led the board since 2007 and, under Yard governance protocol, she will, as past president, become a vice-president of the board.
Rep. Barney Frank, the 16-term Congressman from Massachusetts, had been scheduled to appear earlier this summer at the Hebrew Center in Vineyard Haven but was called back to Washington to deal with the debt ceiling talks. Thankfully, Congressman Frank has rescheduled his talk and will be coming to the Vineyard on Monday, August 29, barring a hurricane, that is.
It’s surprising there aren’t more spooky thrillers that include mysteries, and more mysteries with spooks. When equal mixtures are applied — in other words, scary stuff happening for which a reason must be found — fans of both genres put the books on the top 10 list and a classic is born: The Exorcist, Peter Straub’s Ghost Story, The Shining, even Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, her attempt to write a hot-selling Gothic novel, a genre that runs in and out of fashion but was very much in vogue at the time.
