What I’m Reading on the
Ferry Martha’s Vineyard
Each week this summer, until this Wednesday, which is the last, the folks at Cinema Circus show a series of short films at the Chilmark Community Center. The films begin at 6 p.m. but at 5 p.m. the circus, complete with jugglers, face painters, stilt walkers, food and music, gets underway.
An advanced screening of the films is arranged with a young Island cineaste, plucked from the age bracket of the target audience. In a world with few certainties, the kid critic is the critic to trust.
Vineyard in November
Brooklyn based photographer Anthony Austin is currently enjoying an exhibit at Made Here located at 55 Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs. Mr. Austin has spent part of each summer on the Vineyard since birth (42 years and counting). In 2010 he began visiting the Island in the off-season, arriving every month and spending three days photographing the Island as it progressed through the fall, winter and spring. His current show called Offing captures the look and spirit of the Island in November.
Saying Goodbye is an aptly named new book by Drs. Barbara Okun, an Aquinah summer resident for the past 39 years, and Joseph Nowinski of San Francisco, which Dr. Okun describes as “a co-authorship made in heaven.” The authors provide a fascinating and most helpful guide for people facing terminal illness, and for their families whose lives are disrupted by grief and new responsibilities. The book is peppered with stories of people whose experiences illustrate the points being made.

Social networking Web sites such as Google+, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn have become a part of the equation when it comes to the job hunt. That last statement may serve as yet another source of distress for those looking for work but feeling less than internet savvy. Thankfully, the new book Web 2.0 Job Finder by Brenda Greene and Coleen Byrne gives even the most technologically phobic jobseeker a solid foundation in how best to utilize the internet.
The Martha’s Vineyard Art Association (MVAA) is currently presenting oil paintings by Nancy Blair, photography by Emily Drazen, paintings by Ovid Ward, and a retrospective of artwork by the late Renee O’Sullivan. The exhibit runs through September 2 at the Old Sculpin Gallery located at Dock Street in Edgartown, next to the Chappy ferry.
Due to hurricane Irene, the reception for these artists was postponed to Thursday, September 1, from 5 to 7 p.m.
