Dragonfly Fine Arts Gallery will host a Plein Air Invitational Painting Derby from Sept. 1 through Sept. 25 with a reception on Saturday, Sept. 10.
Space rock conjures up many images, most of which involve laser light shows and music as transport ships headed straight to Orion’s Belt or the nether regions of the Big Dipper. Pink Floyd took you there. So did Jim Hendrix, the Beatles (occasionally with songs like Flying which wandered far afield from just holding your hand), David Bowie and the Rolling Stones with 2000 Light Years from Home. But those are big name brands we’re talking about.
The Martha’s Vineyard Art Association (MVAA) is currently presenting oil paintings by Nancy Blair, photography by Emily Drazen, paintings by Ovid Ward, and a retrospective of artwork by the late Renee O’Sullivan. The exhibit runs through September 2 at the Old Sculpin Gallery located at Dock Street in Edgartown, next to the Chappy ferry.
Due to hurricane Irene, the reception for these artists was postponed to Thursday, September 1, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Vineyard in November
Brooklyn based photographer Anthony Austin is currently enjoying an exhibit at Made Here located at 55 Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs. Mr. Austin has spent part of each summer on the Vineyard since birth (42 years and counting). In 2010 he began visiting the Island in the off-season, arriving every month and spending three days photographing the Island as it progressed through the fall, winter and spring. His current show called Offing captures the look and spirit of the Island in November.
For most people the movie Jaws inspired a renewed appreciation for nonaquatic activities, but for Zach Graves it provided an inspiration for his own award-winning short video. Mr. Graves, an intern at Plum TV, was recently named the winner of the Vineyard Gazette’s video contest. Along with bragging rights, Mr. Graves received a $1,000 first place prize.

A rare collaboration between Harlem Renaissance artists Norman Lewis and Augusta Savage, called The Hubert Log Cabin, is coming up for auction from the Swann Gallery in New York on Oct. 6.
