They are affectionately referred to as long-distance runners. Combined, Carrie Tankard, Marie Araujo and Lorna Andrade have provided over 85 years of service to the Martha’s Vineyard branch of the NAACP. At noon today, the organization will honor the women for their marathon of service to the Island branch, which is one of the most active and diverse in the country.

“These [are] three outstanding ladies who gave of themselves to help others,” said Marie Allen, first vice president of the Vineyard NAACP.

An engineering report examining the stability of scenic East Chop Drive in Oak Bluffs concludes the fragile coastal slope is extremely unstable and showing signs of distress and imminent failure.

The eight-page draft report from the firm of Stearns and Wheler recommends that the town repair the bluff as quickly as possible by both reshaping the coastal bank and installing stabilizing materials such as a concrete block system, heavy riprap, sheet piling or a specially designed mechanically stabilized earth wall.

Artisans’ Festival on the Cliffs

This Saturday, July 25, the Aquinnah Cultural Center will host their third annual All Native Artisans’ Festival atop Moshup’s masterpiece, the Gay Head Cliffs. Pottery, basketry, painted leathers, dolls, silver jewelry and, of course, plenty of wampum will be on offer, as well as a chance to learn about Martha’s Vineyard Wampanoag culture and history.
