The Oak Bluffs Monster Shark tournament resumes this weekend when some of the top fishermen from up and down the East Coast descend on the Island in hopes of landing the prize-winning fish. But with it also comes the return of the debate over the ethical aspects of the event and opposition from several national animal rights groups.
In its early days the shark tournament was a low-key affair, largely viewed as a harmless fishing competition that attracted top fishermen while generating a moderate boost in business for local shops and restaurants.
Walter Cronkite, CBS Evening News anchorman from 1962 to 1981, and a devoted Edgartown seasonal resident for more than three decades, died on Friday at his home in New York after a lengthy illness. He was 92.
The Island Grown Schools’ Summer Institute for Teachers, a three-day workshop for educators on the Vineyard interested in incorporating curriculum tied to farms and gardens into their classes, will run from August 10 to 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at a number of Island locations.
The program is free for Vineyard teachers and will award participants with 20 professional development points upon completion. Past participants and newcomers are welcome to attend.
