They are as common in the summer months on the Vineyard as out-of-state license plates or tourists in T-shirts, those familiar purple and white parking tickets tucked under windshield wipers that spell trouble: you have parked in the wrong spot or stayed too long.
Many get shoved into glove boxes; some are promptly paid, while others are challenged by motorists who either have a legitimate gripe or simply decide to take a shot and hope challenging the ticket will be enough to get it reversed.
Somewhere near the end of his latest book, Losing The News, Alex Jones offers up this unpleasant prospect:
“My nightmare scenario is one of bankrupt newspapers, news by press release that is thinly disguised advocacy, scattered and ineffectual bands of former journalists and sincere amateurs whose work is left in obscurity, and a small cadre of high priced newsletters that serve as an intelligence service for the rich and powerful.”

The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard has a few nice animals who need good homes.
Cats: Harry is an all-black neutered male; Cyrus a big, very friendly all-black neutered male who loves to sit in your lap; Cleopatra is a small, lovely, spayed calico; Itty Bitty is a pretty Balinese female who is gentleand friendly; Belle is spayed and very, vocal, a very pretty gray calico; and there are two all-black very shy kittens.

Trena and Colin Young of Edgartown announce the birth of a daughter, Talia George Young, born on July 19, 2009, at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Talia weighed 7 pounds, 2.4 ounces at birth.

Cilene Carvalho and Lair Sampaio Viana Jr. of Oak Bluffs announce the birth of a son, David Bretas Sampaio, born on July 17, 2009, at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. David weighed 8 pounds, 13 ounces at birth.
