The second annual Martha’s Vineyard Dog Parade is August 22 at 6:30 p.m. in Oak Bluffs’ Ocean Park, and its slogan is Welcome Back Bo, for First Dog Bo Obama.

Everyone is invited, dog or no dog, for a walk in the park.

The opportunity to have your dog marshal the parade was sold to the high bidders at the Possible Dreams Auction, Karen Weitz and Jim Kopf. When they learned they might not be on Island for the parade, the couple passed their dream to a child in the Early Childhood Program at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.

Fluke, Bass Season Ends

Striped bass and fluke are a prime item this weekend in fish markets and in restaurants. And that will be it for the season. Due to the fact that state quotas have been met, the commercial striped bass season will close on Monday, August 23, and the commercial fluke season will close on Wednesday, August 25. The state estimates the 1.12 million-pound quota for striped bass and 846,667-pound quota for fluke have been met. Fish markets will likely have fish for a few days after the fishery closes.

With little fanfare, President Obama landed at the Martha’s Vineyard Airport yesterday afternoon to begin a 10-day Vineyard vacation as planned. Like last year, the arrival was completely closed to the public. The President traveled with the family dog, Bo, and a small group that included his close friend and senior advisor Valerie Jarrett and her daughter.
