The Dukes County Deputy Sheriff’s all-star team had the lead for a short time, in the annual celebrity softball classic on Saturday afternoon in Veteran’s Memorial Park. But it was fleeting, and in the end they lost 20 to 23 before a scattering of fans.

Bob Ogden pitched for the sheriff’s team.

Fair Puppets

Puppetoke, a five-time returning puppet troupe, will be performing once again at the Agricultural Fair.

Each year the Island-based troupe performs a new puppet musical created especially for the fair, a 10-minute story geared for children with wry asides for adults to enjoy. Shows will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and Sunday at noon, 1 and 2 p.m. sharp.

David Flanders of Edgartown recently completed a 75-day course in Baja, Calif., with the National Outdoor Leadership School. Under the guidance of professional instructors, David and his fellow students hiked in the Sierra de la Lagunas mountains of southern Baja, and sea kayaked and sailed in the Sea of Cortez.

Richard North Patterson was honored with an alumni achievement award from Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Mr. Patterson, a 1968 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, joined the fraternity as an undergraduate in 1965. The award was presented during the fraternity’s Karnea convention held in Washington, D.C.

This week Island swimmers were greeted by the three worst words a vacationer can read: CLOSED NO SWIMMING. While sharks have garnered the regional headlines this has been a summer increasingly interrupted for beachgoers by much smaller animals: bacteria.

A number of beaches were closed in Oak Bluffs and West Tisbury on Wednesday due to bacterial contamination.

Light rain hardly dampened the spirits of those attending the Grand Illumination in the Oak Bluffs Camp Ground on Wednesday night. The gingerbread cottagers were perfectly protected on covered porches that glowed and twinkled with light from strings of paper lanterns. The air was misty and magical.

Musicians assembled for a night of music on the stage of the Tabernacle didn’t miss a note; beneath the canopy of the historic pavilion you could hardly tell it was raining outside.
