Tuesday Goodbye
Good morning to all our readers near and far. Tuesday, August 31, will mark the end of the Gazette’s twice a week publication schedule for the year. Read the Tuesday Gazette for complete coverage of the final days of President Obama’s family vacation on the Vineyard. See you Tuesday — one more time before we say goodbye for the summer.
It’s dinner out again for the President and Mrs. Obama, who are at State Road restaurant in West Tisbury on Tuesday night with Vernon and Ann Jordan and longtime friends Eric and Cheryl Whitaker.
During a brief public appearance on the Vineyard on Saturday, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick defended his plan to allow large-scale commercial wind development off the Island. And he insisted that Islanders still have a say in shaping the future.
“It’s really up to Martha’s Vineyard to decide what is right,” he told a small gathering of print, radio and television reporters following a tour of the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
Correction
A photograph in Friday’s Gazette that accompanied a story about the forum organized by Prof. Henry Louis Gates Jr. incorrectly identified the person in the picture as R. Dwayne Betts; the picture was of Bob Herbert.
The Gazette regrets the error.
Island Planning
After the fair, the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury will not be unoccupied for long: on Wednesday, August 25, at 7:30 p.m., a forum on the Island Plan is open to all who care about the future of Martha’s Vineyard — from its energy and commerce, to the environment and housing, to culture and community relations.
Debris from heavy winds and rain that swept across the Vineyard yesterday left at least 2,000 Vineyarders without power, roads blocked, dinghies stranded and a schooner destroyed.
The storm caused damage across the Island, with power outages from West Tisbury to Oak Bluffs, where Beach Road was closed from Ocean Park to Harthaven due to a fallen telephone pole.
