Legislation Proposed to Ban Jet Ski Use

Harbor masters, town officials and many Island residents consider them a safety hazard and an annoyance. Users buy and rent them as recreational vehicles and for the fun of riding Vineyard waters at high speed.

The two colliding positions run to the heart of a longstanding Island and national dispute over use of personal watercraft, better known to many as Jet Skis. Now state legislative proposals governing the use of these watercraft may be changing.

 

 

 

Main Street Project Takes Shape in Tisbury

Tisbury's department of public works voted last week to have residents decide at town meeting next April the fate of seven components of the Main Street Project.

The project - a joint effort of the department of Public Works and the Tisbury Business Association - would take advantage of the opportunity for infrastructure improvements created when roads are dug up for sewer lines.

Despite coming into the Division 6 Super Bowl with incredible momentum - having won seven straight games in which they outscored opponents 206-38 - the Vineyard football squad hit a brick wall Saturday afternoon, suffering a 12-0 defeat at the hands of Marian, a private Catholic school in Framingham.

After rolling to a 24-point margin in their first home playoff game ever, it's little wonder if the Vineyarders marched off the field with only one thing on their minds. As the game clock ticked off the final seconds of Martha's Vineyard's 36-12 win over West Roxbury Tuesday night, the almost 2,000 Island fans in attendance chanted "Super Bowl! Super Bowl!"

Tribal Chairman Wins Election with Plurality

The three-way race for chairman of the Wampanoag tribal council concluded Sunday afternoon with the tribe re-electing incumbent Beverly Wright.

Mrs. Wright will serve a fourth consecutive three-year term. After her victory, Mrs. Wright spoke with the Gazette about her plans for the future.

Mrs. Wright said she wants to create a better communication with the surrounding Island towns and residents of Martha's Vineyard.
