Legislation Proposed to Ban Jet Ski Use

Harbor masters, town officials and many Island residents consider them a safety hazard and an annoyance. Users buy and rent them as recreational vehicles and for the fun of riding Vineyard waters at high speed.

The two colliding positions run to the heart of a longstanding Island and national dispute over use of personal watercraft, better known to many as Jet Skis. Now state legislative proposals governing the use of these watercraft may be changing.

Sherman Goldstein said it was hard for him to even look at the Tisbury Inn. His landmark hotel was destroyed by a fire on Dec. 15, and now stands in ruins, with charred window frames and large blackened holes in its walls.

While many airlines across the nation continue to suffer following the Sept. 11 tragedy, Hyannis-based Cape Air has remained strong during tough times.

Shellfish constable Paul Bagnall oversaw the opening of Oyster Pond and Edgartown Great Pond to the sea on Wednesday, but Thursday's unfavorable wind and surf conspired to close both openings.

Mr. Bagnall said he may try to make the cuts sometime in January if he is presented with a good opportunity; otherwise, he will wait until March. "Now I will take a good look at it," said Mr. Bagnall, "and keep an eye on the weather."
