Legislation Proposed to Ban Jet Ski Use

Harbor masters, town officials and many Island residents consider them a safety hazard and an annoyance. Users buy and rent them as recreational vehicles and for the fun of riding Vineyard waters at high speed.

The two colliding positions run to the heart of a longstanding Island and national dispute over use of personal watercraft, better known to many as Jet Skis. Now state legislative proposals governing the use of these watercraft may be changing.

 

 

 

The state's fire control plans for the 5,200-acre Manuel F. Corellus State Forest have come under attack by the scientific community and the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER), a watchdog organization. The advocacy group threatens possible legal action to block state forest teams from clearing hundreds of acres of woodland along strategic fire lines.

The Martha's Vineyard Regional Transit Authority carried close to 400,000 people in the fiscal year from July 1, 2000 through June 30, 2001. Transit authority administrator Angie Gompert said she estimates 200,000 people were served this July and another 200,000 in August.

The Soldiers’ Memorial Fountain at Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs was rededicated Friday afternoon in ceremonies celebrating the completion of an ambitious two-year restoration project.

Bagpipes, played by Tony Peak, began in the distance and came nearer as the Massachusetts 54th re-enactors and members of American Legion Post 257 marched to the foot of the memorial.

Clouds began to roll in, blocking the splendor of the sun but not the glory of the celebration.

Voters in Aquinnah Give Strong Backing to Tribe On Cliff Lot Lease Rights

At a special town meeting in Aquinnah Wednesday night, 122 voters, or 37 per cent of all those registered, decided that the town should continue to lease its commercial lots at the cliffs exclusively to Wampanoags.

By a margin of 10 votes, 66 to 56, Article 9 passed.
