Legislation Proposed to Ban Jet Ski Use

Harbor masters, town officials and many Island residents consider them a safety hazard and an annoyance. Users buy and rent them as recreational vehicles and for the fun of riding Vineyard waters at high speed.

The two colliding positions run to the heart of a longstanding Island and national dispute over use of personal watercraft, better known to many as Jet Skis. Now state legislative proposals governing the use of these watercraft may be changing.

The Martha's Vineyard Regional High School varsity boys' hockey team defeated the defending state champions Sunday, earning a trip this weekend to Boston's Fleet Center to play for the state championship title.

Through the regular season, first-year head coach Matt Mincone and his players knew they had what it took to contend against the toughest teams in their Division II South league.

A New Coach Takes Varsity Into Playoffs

Monday evening the boys' varsity basketball team pours out from the locker room onto the hardwood floor and forms two lines for pregame layups.

First year head coach Ken Sanders, in a white oxford shirt, tie and black trousers, stands at center court watching his 12 players with a wide smile.

He walks over to one line and stays there until he's shaken and slapped hands with each player.

Tisbury Selectmen Clash With Their Police Chief; Will Not Reappoint Him

As the Tisbury selectmen exchanged a series of terse memos with their chief of police, John McCarthy, the chief revealed this week that he's been put on notice: The selectmen, who also serve as police commissioners, do not intend to reappoint him when his three-year contract expires in June.
