Oak Bluffs police last Friday charged a Needham man with boating under the influence of alcohol after he reportedly ran his boat aground along Seaview avenue near Sengekontacket Pond. Andrew Tappe, 47, was charged with boating while under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a boat and operating an unregistered boat.

Island police yesterday reported a busy but relatively smooth Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The biggest story, of course, was the devastating fire on Main street in Vineyard Haven that destroyed the Cafe Moxie restaurant and caused extensive damage to the landmark Bunch of Grapes bookstore, which cast a pall for many over the usually celebratory Independence Day weekend.

West Tisbury police have been kept busy in the past two weeks with calls for a series of incidents ranging from domestic disputes to minor accidents.

On June 12 police responded to a home on State Road where they removed a person from a job site. Christopher McCloud, 41, of Chilmark, was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and assault and battery on a police officer.

An Indiana woman was cited by Tisbury police on Friday after she reportedly veered over into the oncoming lane of traffic on the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road and collided with a R.M. Packer fuel delivery truck.

Laura Harris, 35, of Indianapolis, Ind., was reportedly driving north towards Vineyard Haven in a Volkswagen Passat when she crossed over the center line and collided with the passenger side of the fuel truck, causing extensive front-end damage to both vehicles. The windshield was blown out of the Volkswagen and the vehicle’s axle was broken.

An Oak Bluffs man was arrested and charged with multiple infractions on Sunday after police said he led them on a high-speed motorcycle chase through several downtown residential neighborhoods.

Police said Wesley Machado Silva managed to briefly evade capture by driving his motorcycle through the backyard of a residence and later told police that someone had stolen his bike. He was charged with failure to stop for police, unlicensed operation, trespassing with a motor vehicle, speeding, failure to stop at (four) stop signs and operating to endanger.
