Readers take heed: again this year, bargain hunters will be rewarded with a wide selection of gently used books at the Library Friends of Oak Bluffs’ annual summer book sale, some priced as low as three for a dollar. There will be pocket-sized paperbacks, larger softcover books, hardcovers and large print. There will be novels, mysteries, biographies, history, sports, self-help, gardening, cooking, maritime, hobby and more. Martha’s Vineyard books and authors will be for sale, as will books for children and teens, plus videos, DVDs and audio books.

There is plenty of room and opportunity for humor for those in pursuit of a spiritual life. Rev. Susan Sparks, a minister from New York city, spoke at Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs on Sunday morning. Her sermon Laughing Your Way to Grace drew applause after she repeatedly got the congregation to laugh. Reverend Sparks, with a Southern accent, said she had a simple message: Religion isn’t just about being serious.

Two people were seriously injured in a two-car accident on Saturday that involved an antique Ford station wagon and a 1997 Toyota Camry near the intersection of Oyster Watcha Road and the Edgartown-West Tisbury Road.

Danielle Nickowal, 19, of Tisbury, was driving eastbound on Edgartown-West Tisbury Road just after 8 a.m. when she came upon a 1929 Ford Model A woodie station wagon stopped in the middle of the road. Ms. Nickowal tried to stop but could not, police said, and struck the rear of the antique car driven by Vernon Oliver, 69, of Tisbury.

One of the land bank’s Island jewels, Ice House Pond near Lambert’s Cove, was briefly closed over the weekend, due to suspected contamination with human waste.

The pond was closed on Friday afternoon, but reopened again on Sunday after testing revealed no bacterial contamination of the water.

Matthew Dix, the property foreman for the land bank, said the decision to close the pond was taken after a swimmer alerted staff on Friday afternoon that she had spotted something floating near the access dock.

A single-engine Cessna headed towards the Vineyard from New Hampshire crash-landed in a cranberry bog near Buzzards Bay on Sunday after the plane experienced engine problems and the pilot attempted an emergency landing. Although the plane was seriously damaged, all four people on board escaped without serious injuries.

Spirited sailors and their sleek sailboats arrive this week for the start of the 86th annual Edgartown Yacht Club Regatta. The regatta appears to be recession-proof. Sailors love to sail, no matter what appears to be going on ashore. Competition begins on Thursday and runs through Saturday. As many as 250 youths and as many people are expected to compete on the water, possibly more than a year ago.

Roughly 50 boats with captains and crew will participate in the day-long ’Round the Island Race, which starts early Saturday morning.
