Highlighting the increasingly complex legal and environmental issue of whether beachfront homeowners should be allowed to armor their property against the eroding south shore, the West Tisbury conservation commission last week once again rejected plans for a large stone revetment on a private property on Tisbury Great Pond.

At issue is a proposed 135-foot stone revetment on the West Tisbury property of Wall Street financier Wesley Edens. Mr. Edens has been trying to armor his property for over a year. His house sits some 90 feet from the edge of the shoreline.

Martha’s Vineyard lost a lot of sand from its beaches, a lot of limbs from its trees, and electricity for varying periods, but otherwise came through Hurricane Irene largely unscathed.

The exception was along the south shore, where erosion brought several homes disturbingly closer to the ocean. Chilmark building inspector Leonard Jason confirmed that one house has become precarious.

Helen Lamb, the indomitable Englishwoman who dreamed up a summertime Brigadoon for the mentally and physically disabled when she created Camp Jabberwocky 58 years ago, died of natural causes Friday at her home in Oak Bluffs, where for six decades she had been a seasonal resident. Her death fell one day shy of her 97th birthday, although her children realized later that since she died at 7:30 at night and was born in England, her death had in fact occurred on her birthday, which was her wish.

Wind Festival Revisited

Too windy for a wind festival: that was the sad news last weekend. But, let’s face it, a kite wouldn’t have stood a chance against even the much milder than expected Irene visitation.

But now we are back to our gentle Island breezes and the wind festival is making another go at it on Saturday, September 3, at Waban Park. The festival begins at 11 a.m. and goes until dusk with kites, frisbees and all manner of wind powered flying contraptions, not to mention high spirits, soaring at the close of summer.
