Oar and Paddle Again

Due to the strong winds last weekend, the Oar and Paddle Regatta was postponed until this coming Sunday, Sept. 4.

For those who missed last weekend’s announcement this is the annual kayak, canoe, and rowboat race to raise money for the Friends of Sengekontacket.

The race and registration begin at the Little Bridge in Oak Bluffs. Registration is from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. with the two-mile race beginning at 10 a.m.

Aquinnah Cultural Center Hosts Expert

On Saturday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m. the Aquinnah Cultural Center is hosting Kevin Grover, the director of the National Museum of the American Indian located in Washington, D.C.

CROP Walk

An advance planning meeting for the Vineyard CROP Walk will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 5 p.m. at Grace Church in Vineyard Haven. The speaker will be the Rev. Bert Marshall, New England Director of Church World Service.

Mass in the Grass

The fourth annual Labor Day celebration and cookout at Grace Episcopal Church in Vineyard Haven gets underway at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, at the big tent on the rectory lawn.

There will food, ice cream, jazz music, and an announcement of a new effort in conjunction with the TogetherNow campaign, to address critical infrastructure needs.

The church is located at the intersection of Woodlawn and Franklin avenues.

While summer movies typ ically lean to big explosions, gooey romances, or gross-out comedies, films of a more thoughtful nature will be loaded into projectors next weekend as the Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival gets underway. The festival, now in its sixth year, begins on Thursday, Sept. 8 and runs throughout the weekend at locations around Vineyard Haven.

The festival is known for bringing together a broad mix of films that include both the serious and lighthearted.

Zach Graves of Boston, who was an intern this summer at Plum TV, is the winner of the Vineyard Gazette’s $1,000 web video contest. The video was to be shown Wednesday night at the Martha's Vineyard Film Festival in Chilmark, but technical difficulties prevented the showing. Watch the video below.
