It’s fall, yes, even officially and not just in the urge to get out the duvet on these chilly nights. This means Halloween is not far away. And if it’s Halloween, it’s time to start thinking of creating a bunch of little orange demons to welcome the would-be witches and skeletons to your doorway.

We’re talking about jack-o-lanterns here.

Permaculture Farm

The Native Earth Teaching Farm in Chilmark is about to embark on a permaculture project to build a self-sustaining food garden.

The idea is to establish an edible forest by mimicking the structure and function of natural ecosystems while producing perennial food crops and many other products. The community is invited to participate through a series of spring and fall planting parties.

The Family Center is set to begin a year-long book group devoted to helping parents navigate the sometimes magical, sometimes mysterious and sometimes downright messy experience of raising children. Each month, beginning in October, a different book will be chosen to be discussed at weekly meetings held on Wednesdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the family center.

The first book is entitled The Five Factors Driving the Growing Epidemic of Unmotivated Boys and Underachieving Young Men. The first meeting is on Oct. 5 when chapters one and two will be discussed.

Martha’s Vineyard Fashion Week, a celebration of fun and fashion culminates on Saturday night with the Designer’s Collection, a red carpet event, at Dreamland above The Chowder Co. in Oak Bluffs.

The event, which includes a runway show, will feature fashions from a variety Island designers and boutiques.

Fashion week festivities, all fund-raising events for Angel Flight Northeast, have included fashion shows, beauty seminars and themed nights at bars and restaurants around the island.

The AASLH Leadership in History Awards recognize achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history.
