Pizza Preservation
Flatbread Pizza continues its benefit nights with an evening devoted to the West Tisbury Congregational Church on Tuesday, Oct. 4 from 5 to 9 p.m.
During these hours a portion of proceeds from all pizza sales will go to help the church’s capital campaign to preserve the historic church and improve accessibility started this summer. There will also be a silent auction.
Oak Bluffs School Benefit
Fine jewelry, culinary treats, unique experiences and other items will be up for auction on Sunday, Oct. 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Farm Neck. All proceeds benefit the Oak Bluffs School eighth grade trip to New York city and Philadelphia. Oak Bluffs School assistant principal Carlin Hart will preside as auctioneer.
The trip, which takes place in June, concludes a year of studying American history.

The seafood consumer loves to eat blue mussels. It’s an internationally consumed product that lends itself very well to modern day aquaculture, including most likely here in Vineyard waters. Last Wednesday, a top mussel grower from Iceland, Vidir Bjornsson, of Nordurskel, came to speak and share pictures of his young blue mussel farm at the Chilmark Public Library. His one-hour talk was devoted to sharing his success, his struggles and his technique.
Vineyard Haven has a new harbor master boat. Built in Texas, the $265,306, 28-foot high-speed boat was paid for through a federal grant awarded two years ago from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The new boat rolled off the ferry Island Home into town on Monday afternoon. Harbor master Jay Wilbur said he is delighted.
Dean’s List
Lauren Bagnall has been named to the spring 2011 dean’s list at Armstrong Atlantic State University. Lauren is a health science major from Edgartown.
A diverse group of bikers, strollers, unicyclists and one space-age yellow Velo bike paraded up Main street Vineyard Haven from Veterans Park to Owen Park last Saturday to announce the formation of the Island Climate Action Network (ICAN), an upstart community organization dedicated to educating the Island about climate issues and ultimately shaping Island policy.
