The Civil War came perilously close to the Vineyard in 1863 and 1864, when Confederate raiders sank fishing boats and schooners all around the Island.
James B. (Jim) Richardson 3rd of Oak Bluffs, a respected historian, told tales about the raiders in a talk at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum titled The Civil War Comes to New England: Confederate Raiders by Land and Sea.

Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard is asking for nominations for the Spirit of the Vineyard Award. This award, given annually, honors those who have served for one or more nonprofit organizations on the Island, and whose work has made a difference to individuals and to the community as a whole. The criteria for selection include selflessness, the range and depth of service performed, the length of volunteer service and the effect on the quality of life of the individuals who received help and for the Island community as a whole.
Oak Bluffs may not have a dog officer but it now has a dog. Selectmen voted last week to hire Buster the black Lab to serve as a K-9 officer.
Given the town’s financial predicament, selectmen were wary of approving the hire, but police chief Erik Blake and Oak Bluffs officer Jeffrey Trudel assured the board that Buster will come at no added cost to the town.
