A New Hampshire attorney and former county commissioner from the Granite State has been selected as the next Dukes county manager.

At a special meeting Wednesday the Dukes County Commission voted 5-2 to offer the position to Katherine Rogers. Ms. Rogers, a former county attorney serving Merrimack County, N.H., will relocate to the Island from Concord, N.H., to accept the full-time position.

The Holmes Hole Sailing Association commenced its Thursday Evening series of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven Harbor on June 21 with a 6:00 p.m.

With a moderate west southwest wind of 8-10 knots, 13 boats posted for the start at red nun 6 outside of the Vineyard Haven breakwater. The fleet sailed a broad reach on the port tack to west chop, jibed onto starboard for a reach to East Chop, and sailed close hauled with one or two tacks to the finish line.

With the summer Olympics approaching, one might be aiming for a sedentary approach to sport. Watch, watch and watch some more the best athletes in the word perform. But hopefully, all that sport will inspire a pro-active approach.

The Vineyard offers ample opportunity to run, jump, hit, swing or swim. This summer, frisbee fans need not look glum, either.

Leg acy of Learning

Save the date for the Legacy of Learning benefit when community members gather to support the Edgartown Public Library at its fourth annual summer fundraiser.

The event, held at Herring Creek Farm in Katama, takes place on July 8 at noon, and will feature two award ceremonies. The foundation honors Norman Bridwell and Norris Darrell with its Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing their contributions to library education. The winner of a poster contest winner will also be presented with an award.

Dean’s List Jordan Wallace of Oak Bluffs has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semster at Saint Micahel’s College in Burlington, Vt. Jordan is the son of Mark and Patricia Wallace. He recently completed his first year as an English major.
