• In 2011 oyster farmers in Edgartown harvested 3,040 bushels of oysters valued at $729,000.

• In 2010 oyster farmers in Edgartown harvested 2,125 bushels of oysters valued at $510,000

• 20,000 oysters are moved on Katama Bay every week

• There are 1,276 acres in Katama Bay; 12 acres are devoted to oyster farms

• An oyster seed is 1.5 millimeters in diameter.

• The minimum size for a harvested oyster is three inches.

Announcing Colton

Kelly M. O’Connell and Leland N. Sylva 3rd of Vineyard Haven announce the birth of a son, Colton Michael Sylva, born on June 17, 2012 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Colton weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce at birth. He joins big brother Leland N. Sylva 4th.

A sweeping harbor improvement plan is now in the works for Menemsha thanks to a hefty grant awarded to the town of Chilmark this spring from the Massachusetts Seaport Advisory Council.

Chilmark selectmen discussed the plan at their weekly meeting Tuesday night, which calls for building new concrete and wooden docks throughout the pier system in the historic fishing village.
