Food Forum Is a Meal for the Mind

Thought leaders in the dynamic world of food journalism will discuss the evolution of their profession next Wednesday at a lunchtime forum called The Changing Story of American Home Cooking.

 

 

 
The Federated Church in Edgartown is stepping into the void to make sure anyone who needs a hot meal can do so every day of the week. After realizing that the Islandwide soup suppers occur every day but Sundays, the church decided to begin holding a free lasagna luncheon on Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m. The lunches begin on Feb. 10 and continue to March 24.

Slow Food is presenting a brunch and panel of local farmers this Sunday, Feb. 10, beginning at 9 a.m. The program takes place at Focus Center, 450 Lambert’s Cove Road, West Tisbury. Brunch will be prepared by the Slow Food crew and served from 9 to 10 a.m. The panel begins at 10 a.m.

A principal from Nauset Regional Middle School was looking for fund-raising ideas for a new greenhouse. School garden coordinators wondered how to keep their plots going during the summer months. A parent spoke about how to create better snack options during school hours.

And they all looked to Island Grown Schools, the Vineyard’s farm-to-school network, for answers.

Carole Early and Gail Burke have been in a book club together and work out at the same gym, but they were surprised to find out they had something new in common. They both will help cook, serve and clean up for the new Thursday night community suppers.

Mrs. Early is a member of the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center and Mrs. Burke is a member of Good Shepherd Parish. The Catholic and Jewish faith communities are working together to provide free meals to those who are hungry

Grace Church knows how to pick up the slack when the Net Result closes and Vineyard Haven goes fishless. They step it up with winter lobster rolls. This Sunday, Feb. 3, they will be serving the filet mignon of the sea from noon until 2 p.m.

The League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard are hosting its annual Black History Month breakfast on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Howes House in West Tisbury. The event will feature Dr. Virginius Bray Thornton 3rd. The topic of his talk will be Women of Interest: Past, Present, and Future.
