Food Forum Is a Meal for the Mind

Thought leaders in the dynamic world of food journalism will discuss the evolution of their profession next Wednesday at a lunchtime forum called The Changing Story of American Home Cooking.

 

 

 

Spring is here at last, and Island Grown Schools celebrates the appearance of the first spring greens in school gardens across the Island.

We dedicated April to greens in our Harvest of the Month program, with taste tests at every school and school meals featuring local and regionally grown greens at least twice throughout the month.

It may not be a rocket launch but the countdown to the Martha’s Vineyard Wine Festival has begun. The festival is underway in less than a week, and where else can you enjoy two types of bouquets: the subtle aroma of a cabernet and a bunch of fresh spring flowers. Homes and businesses on the Island will host everything from an oyster and wine bar to a bottomless Bloody Mary brunch. The festivities begin with a rose reception at Atria on Main street in Edgartown at 2 p.m.

Yankee Magazine’s 2013 Travel Guide to New England special issue awarded the Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company Best Clam Chowder in New England. The Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company’s trademarked chowder is gluten free with no butter or flour. Co-owner and executive chef Alex Nagi created the gluten-free chowder. “The first time I tried the chowder Alex created it was so good I knew we needed to name the restaurant after it,” said JB Blau, the company’s owner, “It took about two bites to realize his chowder was a game changer.

This Sunday learn everything you want to know about classic beer as the Martha’s Vineyard Museum offers Pints of the Past at Dreamland in Oak Bluffs on from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Beer historian and master brewer Christopher Bowen will provide samples of classic beer recipes for the public to taste. He will discuss how beer is made and has changed over time from old England to New England and highlight local New England breweries, too. Pints from the Past is $15 for museum members and $20 for nonmembers. Reservations are required. Call 508-627-4441, ext. 110.

On Wednesday, St. Andrew’s Church in Edgartown is celebrating spring with their annual May 1 breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. The event took a two-year hiatus but is back this year to keep the long tradition running. The first breakfast took place over 50 years ago. In 1967 the breakfast cost just 99 cents.
