Opera Weekend

Sweet Life Café is hosting three wine dinners in support of opera on the Vineyard.

What, you didn’t know the Island was awash in opera? Well, this summer joining established events such as Opera Noire and Dance Opera Theatre, there will be a new Opera Weekend in August produced by Wendy Taucher.

The first dinner takes place Thursday, May 31, and features a Veuve Clicquot champagne dinner including a four-course dinner with five different champagnes.

For the last five years a quiet revolution has been under way in Vineyard schools. It’s taking place in the lunchrooms, where leafy green salads, roasted pumpkin seeds and tacos stuffed with brightly colored peppers from local farms are replacing the more traditional canned corn, tater tots and government surplus fare.

It’s taking place in the school yards, where lush gardens and neatly-turned piles of dark compost can now be found alongside the playgrounds that are trampled by hundreds of young feet at recess every day.

Say Grace

Traditionally, a 25th anniversary is termed the silver anniversary. This year on the Vineyard, silver gives way to the lobster roll. After all, its the 25th season for Grace Church lobster rolls. In all those years, they’ve never had trouble with returns. Tell that to Macy’s.

Last Friday the season began. Think about it, lobster rolls every Friday from now through September. The lines get long come summer, so now is the time to truly savor the moment

Cheese and Wine

The posters are all around town, but for those who saw international terrorist instead of international terroir and walked on by, here’s the deal. Terroir is a French word meaning the characteristic taste and aroma imparted on a cheese or wine by the environment in which it was produced.
