Senior Health and Fitness
Island Elderly Housing is celebrating National Senior Health and Fitness Day for our residents on Wednesday, May 26 between 10 and 11:30 a.m. at our Woodside 2 community room. There are several fitness activities planned for residents including a walk from 10 to 10:30 a.m., a Wii bowling tournament and a lasso golf round robin tournament.
Alzheimer’s Overview
Learn how Alzheimer’s disease differs from other dememtias, how to obtain a diagnosis, how to recognize the signs and symptoms, how the disease progresses and how Alzheimer’s disease differs from normal age-related memory loss, in a talk called Overview of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia on Friday, May 14 at 1:30 p.m. at the Vineyard Haven Public Library. The Hillside Village community center is the last place one would think of going to sit in a dentist chair. But recently, the community center, a living room and kitchen were turned over to Dr. Ghassan Khoury, 43, a dentist from Lexington with a growing following. To his friends, to his patients, he is Dr. Gus.
Lyme Fair
The Southcoast Lyme and Tick Borne Disease Awareness Group will present an educational fair on Lyme disease on Sunday, May 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Westport Grange at 931 Main Road, Westport. This event is free and open to the public.
Look Good, Feel Better
The American Cancer Society, Maggie’s Salon and the Breast Cancer Support Group are hosting a free Look Good, Feel Better event on Wednesday, May 5, at the Vineyard Haven Public Library from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
A similar event last May for women who have been recently diagnosed with cancer was very well received by the 16 participants. This year’s event also brings each participant a top of the line cosmetics gift bag, demonstrations with makeup and hair accessories, including wigs, scarves and caps.
Wellfest, an afternoon of free health and healing workshops and sessions presented by the Martha’s Vineyard Whole Health Alliance, is on Saturday, May 1 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury. This free event features classes, demonstrations and workshops on movement, pilates, yoga, qigong, massage, reiki, acupuncture and more. Scheduled instruction includes a yoga class with Arlene Stark from 12:30 to 1:05 p.m., yoga therapy class with Jane Norton from 1:15 to 1:50 p.m., medical qigong with M.J.
