Video for Stutterers
Stuttering is a problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers and speech-language pathologists at the public libraries in Edgartown, Oak Bluffs and West Tisbury, in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-Age Child Who Stutters, is being distributed free of charge to public libraries nationwide.
The American Red Cross is asking all eligible, healthy blood donors to make and keep appointments to donate blood in the coming weeks. As the cold and flu season approaches, the Red Cross hopes to maintain a stable supply of blood to meet hospital needs. Blood donors who have received the seasonal flu shot are still eligible to donate blood if they are feeling well on the day of the donation.
The Hob Knob, an eco-boutique hotel in Edgartown, is pleased to offer Winter Wellness packages, beginning January 2010. These packages incorporate weekend stays at the hotel with a culinary and exercise program, providing a unique health and wellness experience. Katryn Yerdon, ISSA certified personal trainer and professional chef will offer cooking classes and guided nature hikes.
After much debate about logistics, and delays caused by vaccine shortages, it appears likely that all Vineyard residents will be offered vaccination against both swine flu and regular flu, at a single big clinic, on Nov. 11.
A meeting of the Island’s various town health agents, school nurses, tribe and other public health officials late yesterday agreed on that date and the venue — the regional high school — with one proviso, that the state comes through with enough vaccine to allow it to proceed.
The American Red Cross will offer free volunteer classes at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School beginning Oct. 6 and running through Nov. 7.
After the training, volunteers become Red Cross certified, and with some experience can be deployed locally and nationally. The class is open to anyone 17 years and older who would like to become a Red Cross disaster action team member. There are no other prerequisites and all classes are free.
CPR and First Aid Class
The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands chapter, will be holding an Adult CPR/AED and First Aid class on Oct. 10 at the YMCA at 57 Pequot avenue in Oaks Bluffs, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It costs $50 for CPR/AED or $60 for CPR/AED and First Aid.
