Sengekontacket Pond will be closed to shellfishing for another summer, Edgartown selectmen announced at their weekly meeting on Monday.

In a letter to the selectmen, shellfish constable Paul Bagnall said he was told by the state Division of Marine Fisheries of the closure at a meeting in New Bedford last week. Mr. Bagnall said the state ordered the closure in order to gather more data to determine whether rainfall closures will be necessary for the pond. The pond has been closed on and off to summer shellfishing since 2007 due to fluctuating bacteria levels.

Over strong objections from competing taxi companies, the West Tisbury selectmen this week granted a new company a license to operate in town.

Lighthouse Taxi, owned by Nick Catt and Josh Tucker, will operate a year-round, 24-hour taxi service from the airport with four vehicles.

At the weekly selectmen’s meeting Wednesday, Ben Baldwin and Gary Davidson of Bluefish Taxi strongly objected to a new taxi company in town and said business is suffering.

Requests for spending on a fire truck and a police cruiser, a series of zoning and personnel bylaws and a lean town operating budget await Chilmark voters at the annual town meeting Monday night.

Longtime moderator Everett Poole will preside over the 37-article warrant; the meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center.

Voters will be asked to approve a $7 million dollar budget, up only $238,000 over last year, due to an increased cost of living adjustment for town employees and a hefty ambulance service budget.

The Edgartown zoning board of appeals approved a special permit for a new restaurant on South Water street on Wednesday with conditions.

Brothers Patrick and Ted Courtney plan to convert a greenhouse tucked off South Water street into a restaurant. The original plan called for outdoor seating for 40 people and indoor seating for 20, but the seating plan was cut down to 49 yesterday in order to avoid the need for possible review by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. The Courtneys hope to be open by July 1.

The standard of education at the West Tisbury School was a topic for discussion during the most recent up-Island regional school district meeting.

School committee member and West Tisbury representative Michael Marcus had asked parents to attend the meeting to discuss ideas for raising the academic bar.

Mr. Marcus said parents who have sent their children to off-Island schools such as the Falmouth Academy had approached him to say student needs were not being met on the Island.
