Artists communicate in different forms. But whether the message is through visual or performing art, it always comes back to the essence of the human experience.

Two groups have been in residence for the past two weeks at the Vineyard Arts Project, working to highlight both the dark and exhilarating sides of the human experience. This weekend they go public with their work.

As the sun began to set at the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Hall fair grounds Sunday evening, farmers began to haul their animals into waiting trailers, the last skillets were tossed in the air and only a few whirls of cotton candy remained shrouded in the golden August haze.

All signs pointed to the end of the 150th Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Livestock Show and Fair but there were still a few awards to be handed out.

President Obama arrived on the Vineyard yesterday afternoon to begin a 10-day vacation with his family, marking his third consecutive August visit to the Island during his presidency. Like the last two years, the arrival was low-key and closed to the public. Traveling with the President were White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan and deputy press secretary John Earnest, White House trip director Marvin Nicholson, White House photographer Pete Souza, and the family dog, Bo, freshly groomed for the trip.

Chilmark selectmen this week took up a request from a town resident to dredge a creek in Chilmark Pond.

Mary Jane Pease said Intern’s Creek in the westernmost section of the pond needs to be dredged to restore proper drainage from Pease’s Brook. She said dredging the creek would lower the risk of a breach at Lucy Vincent Beach and suggested the work could be done with an excavator.

Aquinnah selectmen on Tuesday approved the town’s first taxi regulations, adopted a maintenance plan for Old South Road and appointed a new assistant harbor master.

The taxi regulations passed with little discussion. Aquinnah Taxi is the only licensed cab company but selectmen said the new regulations could potentially pave the way for more cab companies in town. All new taxi company licenses must first be approved by the selectmen.
