When the kerosene lamps were being rewired during the recent Lambert’s Cove Church restoration, a shopping list for a ham and bean supper was found in the walls.
“It was written in the most beautifully blue ink writing from a quill, it was dated to 1895,” Joshua Yates said. “It called for five pounds of salted pork and barrels of beans.”
A sharply divided Martha’s Vineyard Commission voted to approve the roundabout for the blinker intersection in Oak Bluffs last week, ending a decade-long debate over the traffic improvement project.
After a three-hour heated discussion, the roundabout was approved 7-6. Commissioner Chris Murphy, who chaired the meeting, broke the tie and cast the deciding vote.
The Vineyard’s public access television network is moving forward with ambitious plans to build a new facility despite the resignation last week of the MVTV executive director and longtime board chairman.
Julienne Turner, who has headed MVTV since July 2010, and Denys Wortman, an MVTV founder and chairman of its board since 2002, announced Oct. 4 they were stepping down. Ms. Turner, who will stay on until the end of the year, said her reasons were personal. Mr. Wortman said his decision was triggered by hers.
Better cell phone service may be in the future for Chappaquiddick if a plan for a wireless tower presented to the Edgartown selectmen this week becomes reality.
Planning board administrator Georgiana Greenough said the town had hired a consultant to identify potential town-owned land parcels for sites for a tower. A digital antenna system (DAS) is also a possibility, although more expensive.
One day last April 91 Islanders visited the Island Food Pantry. Each person collected their allotted three bags of donated food, which meant 273 bags were distributed in a single day. It was a record in the pantry’s 30-year history.
That number is expected to climb in the coming year, pantry director Armen Hanjian said this week.
