Martin, deaf education specialist and Professor and Dean Emeritus at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, will speak at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22 at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Martha’s Vineyard in Vineyard Haven. After a season fractured by illness that forced the cancellation of several practices and games, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School field hockey team had to endure even more adversity last week when they drew Nantucket in the opening round of the MIAA Division II south tournament.

The Vineyarders lost 2-1 in a taut, well-played contest over on the sister island, but the final score does not begin to tell the whole story.

Coach Lisa Knight offered a blunt evaluation of the season.

The Vineyard Health Care Access Program is holding a public information meeting for legal permanent residents who used to have Commonwealth Care health insurance and lost their coverage due to state budget cuts. The new plan, called Commonwealth Care Bridge Health Plan, began for most of these members on Martha’s Vineyard on Nov. 1.

Representatives of CeltiCare, the health insurance company that offers the Commonwealth Care Bridge Health Plan, will discuss the benefits, costs and participating providers, and answer questions.

Over the years she has sold a lot of eels and given out a lot of advice about how and where to catch fish.

And last month Ruth Meyer, former longtime owner of Larry’s Tackle Shop and a quiet unsung hero in the fishing community, was inducted into the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby hall of fame.

On a rain-streaked morning last week, Ms. Meyer sat at her home in Edgartown and recounted a few memories. “I didn’t choose to run a fishing tackle shop because sales was my profession. I inherited it,” she said.

The American Red Cross will be holding an adult CPR/AED and First Aid class on Nov. 14 at 57 Pequot avenue in Oaks Bluffs.

From 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the class covers rescue breathing, first aid for choking, recognizing a heart attack, CPR skills, and care for injuries and sudden illness.

Cost is $50 for adult CPR/AED, or $60 for adult CPR/AED and first aid.

The first aid certification is valid for three years and the adult CPR/AED certification for one year.

Birdies for Baseball

The fifth annual Birdies for Baseball Charity Golf Tournament was held Saturday, Oct. 24 at Mink Meadows Golf Club. First place went to the REMAX team of Duncan Cooper, Joyce Cooper, Wes Nagy and Chris Chvatal. Second place went to the Island Propane Inc. team of John Dutton, Bob Murray, Andy Downs and John Rancourt. Third place went to Breese Architects team of Cheryl Crowther, Cindy Anderson, Sasha White and Steve Pogue. The weather was great and baseball players of Martha’s Vineyard were the ultimate beneficiaries.
