Striped bass, one of the most prized fish swimming in Vineyard waters, the focus of fishing tournaments and the dish on many dinner tables, is in decline here, that much is agreed. But what to do about it? That is not, and the divided opinions are lining up around new restrictions proposed to protect the fish.
A chill is in the air and for many, cabin fever has begun to set in. This Sunday, Dec. 13, is a great opportunity to grab that antique firearm off the mantle and head over to the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club for the annual Black Powder Shoot.
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., big sounds will resound as muskets, blunderbusses and hand cannons herald the day before the primitive firearm deer season opens on the Island. Members and the public are invited to participate.
Red Cross Classes
The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter will be holding an Adult CPR/AED and First Aid class on Dec. 12 at the YMCA on Martha’s Vineyard at 57 Pequot avenue in Oaks Bluffs. The class will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and costs $50 for CPR/AED only, or $60 for CPR/AED and First Aid.
Students will receive training manuals and certification cards.
Pending legislation to make striped bass a game fish in Massachusetts was further delayed this week when a public hearing was postponed at the request of backers of the bill.
The hearing by the joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture was due to be held on Tuesday on Beacon Hill, but has now been rescheduled for January.
Cape and Islands Sen. Robert O’Leary and Rep. Timothy Madden both sit on the committee.
The final game of the season for the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School football team on Saturday offered plenty of excitement for the homecoming crowd, as the Vineyarders rolled over Brighton by a final score of 41-8.
It was a satisfying win for players and coaches — as well as the approximately 500 fans in the stands. For the past 50-plus years the Vineyard has played Nantucket the weekend before Thanksgiving, but this year the opposing players were dressed in Brighton’s red and yellow instead of the Whalers’ customary blue and white.
