Vineyard Haven’s Rasmus Sayre added a few extra days to school vacation to win his age group at the Techno 293 Junior Windsurfing North American Championships held in Merritt Island, Fla. Raz, aged 12 and a seventh grader at Tisbury School, bested sailors from Mexico, U.S. and Canada to win the Under 15 age division. A series of eight races over three days determined the champions. The highlight of the event for Raz was competing against the Mexican team, which he had never seen before.
You Can Be a Referee
Friends of Vineyard Soccer will sponsor a certification class for new referees age 16 and older. The full-day class will be held on March 28 at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club in Edgartown It also includes an online portion. Register in advance online at massref.net/Central/courseofferings.cfm
Certified referees are paid between $20 and $50 per match, and are eligible to work youth soccer and adult leagues.
St. Patrick’s 5K
The annual St. Patrick’s Day(ish) 5K road race and fitness walk, a benefit for the Martha’s Vineyard Boys’ and Girls’ Club, is Saturday, March 28, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Ocean View Restaurant and Tavern on Chapman avenue in Oak Bluffs. The 3.1-mile, USATF certified course loops around East Chop, promising scenic views for runners and walkers.
This year, race organizers have added a Fun Run for kids ages five to 12, starting at 10 a.m.
Grief Support
Is someone close to you dying or been struck by a terminal illness? Do you feel that you are already grieving? Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard is forming an anticipatory grief group, to support those undergoing the fear, frustrations and other emotions that accompany the grieving process that often begins before death.
Red Cross Classes
American Red Cross will hold an Adult CPR/AED and First Aid Class in Oak Bluffs on March 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and costs $50 for Adult CPR/AED or $60 for Adult CPR/AED and First Aid.
The combined class covers rescue breathing, first aid for choking, recognizing a heart attack, and Adult CPR and AED knowledge as well as skills necessary to recognize and care for injuries and sudden illness. The First Aid certification is valid for three years and the Adult CPR/AED certification is valid for one year.
Holistic Health Fair
Body-Mind-Spirit Fair is this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oak Bluffs VFW Post on Towanticut avenue. Learn about various tools used to enhance physical and spiritual well-being with free workshops throughout the day. Also, private, individualized metaphysical readings and healing sessions are available, including tarot card readings, clairvoyant readings, astrological chart readings, tea leaf readings, palm readings, crystal reiki healing and massage therapy.
