Island waters are filled with bluefish, especially now. Striped bass fishing is sketchy and the bonito are only now arriving, but for Vineyard and Nantucket commercial and recreational anglers, there is one certainty: the bluefish are here.

Capt. Tom Mleczko of Nantucket reports bluefishing is good this summer for him, as good as it was last year. He fishes in a 29-foot Hawk called Priscilla J.

Charity Skeet Shoot

Andy Braillard of Vineyard Haven won the 11th Annual Klays for Kids Charity Skeet Shoot on July 20 at the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club.

The event, contested under ideal weather conditions, benefits the club’s three projects for Island kids, was held at the club’s skeet range.

In just a few months, Island golf phenomenon Tony Grillo will be lighting up the Ivy League when he enters his freshman year at Harvard University and plays on the school’s storied golf team. But this summer he is busy proving once again he is one of the top amateur players in the state — if not the nation.

Massachusetts is in the midst of a blood shortage due to a decline in blood donations, a spokeswoman for the American Red Cross said Monday. Meanwhile, officials at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital said demand for blood on the Vineyard has increased with the summer swell in population.

Those involved with blood supply agree the current situation makes a high turnout critical for this Thursday’s Martha’s Vineyard Community Blood Drive.

While many nonprofits across the nation are cutting staff and programs due to the weak economy and rising operational costs, the Vineyard Nursing Association over the past six months has gone in a different direction, nearly doubling the number of patients under its care while hiring new staff and expanding its programs.
