When it comes to the off-season, the Vineyard shines at a couple things. One is dancing. Another is dessert. Last Saturday at the annual Barnraisers’ Ball at the Agricultural Hall, there was plenty of both, set to the music of Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish that kept the barn bouncing.

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon in early November, but there, already, was Santa — and riding a motorcycle, too. What’s more, behind him was a line of about 60 more riders, all ready to criss-cross the Island and pick up toys and donations for the neediest kids here. The group was the Martha’s Vineyard Harley Riders, and last Sunday marked their annual Red Stocking tour around the Island.

Sandra Barberio Webster has been appointed site manager at Hillside Village, a unit of Island Elderly Housing, executive director Ann Wallace announced.
Sandra, a longtime visitor to the Island, moved here permanently a few years ago to join her mother and son. Much of her career was spent in the food industry in a variety of managerial positions.

Lilian DeSouza Silveira and Ricardo Silveira Machado of Vineyard Haven announce the birth of a daughter, Melissa DeSouza Silveira, born on Oct. 31, 2008, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Melissa weighed 6 pounds, 7.2 ounces at birth.
