The annual Oak Bluffs tree lighting ceremony will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The community is invited to this free event, beginning with caroling at 6:30 p.m. at Post Office Square. The Vineyard Classic Brass Ensemble will perform a medley of traditional holiday carols and board of selectmen chairman Ron DiOrio will officially light the town tree.
November is an unusual time to open an art gallery on Martha’s Vineyard. The summer crowds, with their disposable incomes and endless leisure time, have been replaced by the year-round residents with their bills and 40-hour work weeks. And in this economic climate, with art markets large and small starting to feel the trickle-down effect from the crisis on Wall Street, artists and dealers alike might find themselves seeking shelter from the storm with other pursuits, or even abandoning ship all together.
Peacecraft holiday craft sale will be located at 9 Beach Road in Vineyard Haven this year, opening the day after Thanksgiving and running through Dec. 24. Organizers hope to recruit enough volunteers to be open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Vineyard football team may be on the field for two and a half hours of game time tomorrow, but it takes days, weeks and a year of effort by another team to get them there. The Martha’s Vineyard Touchdown Club, a nonprofit organization, works to get those players onto the field for each of the 10 or more games they play each season. At least 100 students benefit directly from the club, including 72 football players and 28 cheerleaders.
It was a triumphant return to form for the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School football team in 2008.
After a run of successful but ultimately frustrating seasons, the Island team dominated its Mayflower League Large opponents and went undefeated in the conference, earning a berth in the Division 3A Eastern Massachusetts playoffs for the first time in five years.
Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School girls’ and boys’ cross-country teams capped off another strong season last weekend at the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association division III finals.
The girls finished 14th overall at the division meet held at Franklin Park in Boston, while the boys finished 15th. Only the top five teams advance to the all-state meet held tomorrow, also at Franklin Park.
