When the telephone rings at suppertime it may be a telemarketer. Or it may be a professional fund-raiser looking for money for a local police or sheriff’s organization. In recent days a small army of solicitors has begun canvassing the Island by telephone looking for donations.
The financial cost of the most recent round of feuding within the Tisbury police department and the related departure of former chief John Cashin is finally available, and it is more than $30,000.
Some eight weeks after Mr. Cashin went public with the extraordinary criticisms of his “dysfunctional” department which cost him his job, the town this week released details of his severance package.

The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard has two beautiful cats who need homes: Star, a two-plus-year-old spayed female calico who has had all her shots; and Luna, a long-haired lovely black and white three-year-old female, who is also spayed and has had all her shots.
Dogs available for adoption are: Trent, the gentle giant great Dane; a neutered male Rhodesian ridgeback boxer cross, two years old; and Sophie, a five-year-old springer spaniel cross. All dogs are neutered and up to date on their shots.
The task of finding a solution to the gradual disappearance of the view from the Tashmoo overlook was firmly dropped back in the laps of the selectmen by the town’s conservation commission this week.
The commission told a small group of people concerned about the view that it would not attempt to force the owners of a stand of willow trees, which are progessively obscuring the view, to prune or remove them, because it had no power to do so.
A fuel truck making a delivery to Jim’s Package store in Oak Bluffs on Friday spilled an undetermined amount of gasoline near Nancy’s Restaurant along the harbor. The spill was not reported to town or state officials until three days later.
Pet Blessing
Father Nagle of the Good Shepherd Parish will be conducting a blessing of pets, with Plum TV filming on site, when Island animal lovers celebrate pets on Saturday, June 27, from noon to 2 p.m. at Sunset Park in Oak Bluffs.
There will be an open house the same day at the shelter located on Pennywise Path off the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road where you can tour the facilities and enjoy refreshments. The open house hours will be from 10 a.m. to noon and 3 to 5 p.m. For details call, 508-627-8662.
