The Holmes Hole Sailing Association commenced its summer season of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven harbor with a tune-up race on June 14. Six boats posted at the start at red nun six outside the breakwater for the noon commencement of the 35th season of the association races. Hugh Swarz, one of the founders, was on the race committee boat.
A budding Vineyard tradition resumes next week when two teams from the Cape Cod Baseball League — the Falmouth Commodores and Wareham Gatemen — play in the second annual John and Dorothy Connors Memorial Cup. The game is at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School baseball diamond.

Island businesses already pinched by the recession will soon have to contend with a slew of new taxes recently approved in a state budget that will boost the cost of everything from a bottle of wine at the package store to a steak dinner at restaurants.

Salve Workshop
Holly Bellebuono of Vineyard Herbs returns to the Polly Hill Arboretum on Tuesday, July 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. for her popular salve-making workshop. This fun hands-on workshop starts with a walk to identify and collect medicinal herbs. Afterwards participants make their own oil infusions and beeswax-based ointments. Learn practical knowledge on when and how to use herbal salves, and take home your useful creation. Supplies are included. Cost is $40, $35 for Polly Hill Arboretum members.
