Henry Louis (Skip) Gates Jr. uses the quiet entrance, through the corridors of the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School to a backstage area of the performing arts center, no doubt the sort of precaution he regularly takes since his arrest and high profile beer with the President last month.
But as he enters, he bellows with a theatrical gesture of his walking cane in the direction of his friend and legal counsel, Charles J. Ogletree Jr., the man he calls Tree.
It’s a lazy Sunday evening on Martha’s Vineyard and the kids are loping along a wooded path to a pond, picking blueberries and debating whether “plink, plank, plunk” is really the sound the plump fruits make as they drop into the empty coffee can. The chapter books will be set aside tonight, and Blueberries for Sal will make a comeback at bedtime. It always does in August.
“Will the blueberries still be out when the Obamas come?” asks my daughter.
The Obamas will miss what is generally considered the busiest week on the Vineyard, featuring Grand Illumination Night at the Camp Ground in Oak Bluffs, the Oak Bluffs fireworks and the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society Livestock Show and Fair in West Tisbury.
Through history, presidents, former presidents, and not -yet-presidents have visited the Vineyard.
But it was a First Lady who caused the biggest stir.
In August of 1961 on a Sunday afternoon President Kennedy, his wife, Jackie, and daughter, Caroline, came over to the Vineyard on board the Marlin. They picked up some friends on Chappaquiddick and anchored off the Chappaquiddick Beach Club.

To Island for Day of Golf
Former President Bill Clinton was on-Island yesterday for a spot of golf, among other orders of business, according to sources.
Mr. Clinton arrived early Monday by plane, carrying a bag of golf clubs, and was expected to fly out late last night. Neither his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, nor his daughter, Chelsea, was travelling with him.
