The last remaining New England whale ship with Vineyard connections — the Charles W. Morgan — may sail again. The president of Mystic Seaport spoke at a private fund-raising function recently in Edgartown, at the home of S. Bailey Norton, to report on the Morgan, now undergoing a $6 million restoration effort. It may take another $2 million to do the necessary work to get her to sail.

Kathleen Fitzgibbon presented a workshop, Compassionate Dialogue as Reflective Practice, at the annual conference of the American Holistic Nurses Association in Madison, Wisc., in June. The workshop was based on her master’s thesis, Listening to Nurses’ Stories, and has inspired the creation of the Nurses’ Kindness Project. Kathy has a private practice in Vineyard Haven and is available for consultation and workshops.
Wednesday mornings at Mytoi a volunteer garden maintenance program is fortunate to have three young volunteers., Sarah Roden, Burke Hildner and Jack Kent.
To date they have spent 28 hours weeding, following the master gardener with wheelbarrows to pick up pruned branches, clearing the brook of overenthusiastic plants, searching for a camera which got accidentally dumped into the pond, and weeding the paths. Their only reward is heartfelt thank-yous and a walk to the bridge to coax the three snapping turtles to come for a visit (at a distance).
The Island plein air artists in Dragonfly Gallery’s Summer Visions show raised $400 for Martha’s Vineyard Habitat for Humanity. Sixteen artists each paid an entry fee of $25 as a contribution to Habitat: Monte Becker, William Buckley, Traeger di Pietro, Mary Emerson, Valentine Estabrook, Nancy Furino, Susan Johnson, Magi Leland, Ellen Liman, Kanta Lipsky, Thaw Malin, Marjorie Mason, Don McKillop, June Schoppe, Elizabeth Taft and Linda Thompson. A portion of the sales from the show will be donated to Island Affordable Housing Trust.
