Some 20 years ago, property developer Sam Dunn precipitated a major development battle with his plan for what is today the Tisbury Marketplace, a small commercial complex off Beach Road in Vineyard Haven. Now history could repeat itself, as he plans a new development beside the original.
As most recently advanced — Mr. Dunn has tried a couple of times since the original development — the planned building of some 7,000 square feet would be located on land between the marketplace and Lagoon Pond.

A couple of weeks ago a young man named Max had a birthday party, and he asked his friends and relatives to make a donation to the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard instead of giving him gifts. He collected $170. Congratulations Max and thank you from all the animals at the shelter — what a great idea!
Morning Glory Farm and the Family that Feeds an Island, the story of the largest farm on Martha’s Vineyard, has been named the best local cuisine cookbook in the United States by the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. The award has placed it into the running for the best in the world award in this category, to be announced in February in Paris.
The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards is an internationally recognized organization that holds the world’s largest cookbook and drinks book trade fair every year. This year, 6,000 books were submitted.
Trivia jockey Dan Cassidy posed the killer question: “What is the only state capital that borders another country and is accessible only by sea or air?”
The contestants’ tables buzzed. What’s Washington’s capital? Olympia? Why isn’t it Seattle? Don’t get distracted. Is Olympia on the ocean? No idea. What about Alaska’s capital? That’s too easy. Or is it? Hmm, maybe Anchorage is correct. Wait — is Anchorage the capital? Or does Juneau sound right? Time’s up, get the card in!
Hoo-Rah for Kelsey
The Tisbury Business Association is pleased to announce that Kelsey Ivory is the winner of its Dec. 3 Holiday Raffle. Mr. Ivory won a gift basket filled with goodies from Vineyard Grocer, Bunch of Grapes, Children in the Arts of Martha’s Vineyard and Tyler and Tallulah. In celebration of shopping locally, the association is holding Holiday Raffles every Thursday through Dec. 17, filled with goodies from participating businesses.
Vineyard environmentalists invite all to a rally on Saturday, Dec.12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a Five Corners in Vineyard Haven, joining with 350.org to urge global leaders for real progress at the climate change summit in Copenhagen.
“Specifically, our rally will urge President Obama to commit to lowering CO2 levels from the present 387 ppm level (parts per million) back to a sustainable 350 ppm level,” said longtime activist Joan Ames.
